Spring Break Status

With Spring Break now letting CMU students get their well-needed rest, the Formula team pushes on. We will have a group working all throughout next week to put our car together for an early completion date.

Recent developments include the beginning stages of body and composite layup work, which have already begun taking over the garage. Completed anti-roll bars, pedal mounts, and a lightweight aluminum radiator shroud can also be seen.

Website Updates

Michigan is approaching! Check out CMR’s newly added Countdown to Michigan on the page’s right-hand side. With only about two months until Competition, this countdown will serve as a constant reminder to us that the clock is ticking and we need to keep pushing forward.

Also an important addition – on the top menu bar a section has been created titled “Calendar” that will link to CMR’s team schedule. All important meetings, events, and various team activities will be posted there, so if you’re looking to get involved or want to see what we’re up to, then visit the Calendar page for more info.

Shiny Metal Objects

Check out these freshly CNCed Anti-roll Bar lever arms that were completed this week along with their weight saving-design. With only a few more items to produce CMR 67s suspension can begin final assembly.

Another project that has recently finished can be seen at the often neglected bottom of our engine. Instead of carrying around unnecessary oil weight, we have removed around an inch from the oil pan and welded a lighter aluminum plate higher up on the engine. This has led to a weight savings of over a pound not to mention to lower CG that has also be achieved.

Also pictured are exhaust tubes awaiting assembly and a muffler that is many pounds lighter than last year.

February Progress

With February creeping by, final touches are being made on the chassis and production has begun on many non-structural systems. Check out some of our guys finish welding the chassis, making lathe suspension components, and a mock-up dashboard for preliminary testing and driving feedback.

In other news,Our webcam tab is working again too! So feel free to check out the work going on in the garage.

Also happening are our ever-popular Mastercam parties, with many of us working hard to figure out the CNC and its corresponding program to manufacture more complex parts.

Welcome New Electric Car Members!

Carnegie Mellon Racing would like to welcome all the new and prospective ECE members who are interested in our upcoming Electric Race Car! It was great seeing you all at our meeting and info session.

To get a sense of how our organization works, feel free to scroll down through the postings and pictures of our progress. Another great resource will be the Wiki tab above, where you can find some general information on our car.

If you would like to learn more information, or missed putting your name on the list please contact formula-sae@andrew.cmu.edu and let us know. We look forward to working with you all.

New Semester Progress

Carnegie Mellon Racing is definitely back and running after a relaxing and productive winter break. Shipments of materials have been pouring in the garage for the last two weeks and are quickly turning into race car components.

Check out these beautiful featherweight bellcranks that have recently be CNCed. Massive weight savings in suspension continue to develop with optimized a-arms and downsized ARB mounts shown. The chassis has now been nearly finish welded in near record time too thanks to our pre-cut tubes and new welder-training program.

Also of note is our incredibly organized lathing area, the team’s diff tensioning project, and the awesome custom radiator that will be cooling our car this year.

Suspension Machining

Check out the impressive mass production of push/pull rods and rod end inserts that the team has put together this week. Front and rear bellcranks should also be fully CNCed in the near future, while newly finished torsion bars and anti-roll bar chassis mounts are shown below.

Operation Occupy the Machine Shop

With the semester coming to a close, the manufacturing stage has been in full swing for Carnegie Mellon Racing. We have been working non-stop on finalizing designs, ordering parts, and machining. Check out the awesome chassis that has developed in the garage as a result.

CNC work has also begun with suspension and diff components, while engine modifications are now being carried out to lighten our oil pan. Although we’ve had an aggressive timeline, everyone has been striving to meet our goals by winter break.

Shown here is the chassis and the diff, along with some sweet scale model testing being conducted by the fuel system team regarding baffle effectiveness.

Chassis is Forming

With our beautifully pre-cut tubes, the chassis has been growing very quickly down in the Formula Garage. Jigging has largely been set up and several major components are now welded. Check out some pictures of the progress, and look for much more to be completed in the next week.
